Penn State Football heads towards the 2023 season with as much as hype as any team in the country.

Penn State Football will look to follow up an 11-2 season in 2022 with its first ever College Football Playoff appearance in 2023.

Between the abundance of returning talent the Nittany Lions have, and the beginning of the Drew Allar era at quarterback, there are plenty of reasons to feel good about Penn State’s chances in 2023.

The Nittany Lions capped off a 10-2 regular season in 2022 by winning the program’s second ever Rose Bowl. Penn State’s two losses came to two of the four teams who made the College Football Playoff as well.

Needless to say, this was a very good Penn State team, but one that caught many by surprise. The Nittany Lions were unranked heading into the 2022 season and had win total projections around eight.

The Nittany Lions will start the 2023 season ranked, but one outlet isn’t expecting Penn State to take that next step forward in 2023.

247 Sports dropped its Big Ten win total projections for this upcoming season and Penn State had the third highest total in the conference at 9.5. This means 247 Sports is pretty much expecting Penn State to repeat what it did in 2022.

Both Michigan and Ohio State had win totals of 11, meaning 247 Sports is projecting those two teams to be undefeated when they meet the final week of the season. In this scenario, Penn State would once again be losing to both.

The Nittany Lions losing to both Michigan and Ohio State again would be a tough pill to swallow for most fans. The expectation is that this team will build upon the success the 2022 team had and take that leap forward.

Not being able to knock off at least one of the two powerhouses and reach 11 wins in a regular season would be disappointing to many fans. Penn State Football has not won 11 regular season games since 2008.

James Franklin has built a talented and deep roster for 2023, the idea of 9.5 wins being the total does seem low, but the aspect of not believing Penn State is better than Michigan or Ohio State is understandable until proven otherwise.
