Miles Sanders’ presence may be enough for the Philadelphia Eagles to win the Super Bowl
Former Penn State Football running back Miles Sanders continues the program’s successful run in the Super Bowl.
With Miles Sanders and the Philadelphia Eagles reaching the Super Bowl, a Penn Stater has now appeared in 52 of 57 Super Bowls.
Sanders was key part of the machine that was the Eagles this season. He had a career year, rushing for 1,269 yards and 11 touchdowns, which helped the Eagles secure the No.1 seed in the NFC with a 14-3 record.
In the two Eagles playoff wins, Sanders has carried the ball 28 times for 132 yards and two touchdowns. While his play may help Philadelphia win its second Super Bowl, his presence on the field alone may be enough.
In the 51 prior Super Bowls that a Penn Stater played in, a Nittany Lion has been victorious 40 times. This includes an active streak of seven straight wins by a Penn Stater in the Super Bowl.
Now, Penn Stater is the key here, not Penn State Football player. Three of those appearances and two victories are by former Penn State lacrosse player Chris Hogan with the New England Patriots.
Of the 51 appearances by Penn Staters, there were 23 instances in which there was a Penn State representation by both teams, meaning there had to be a winner.
Sanders is the only Nittany Lion on the active roster of either team this year. In the prior 28 instances in which only one team had a Penn Stater, the Nittany Lions are 17-11 in those games. While it is a winning record, it’s not exactly a guaranteed win.
Don’t fret just yet Eagles fans, Penn Staters are 3-0 in the last three instances in which only one team had a Nittany Lion on its active roster.
Miles Sanders will look to complete his Pennsylvania football journey with a Super Bowl win for Philadelphia. Sanders won Mr. Football for the state of Pennsylvania as senior at Woodland Hills high school in Pittsburgh. He then moved east for college, winning the 2016 Big Ten Championship with Penn State. Sanders moved even further east to begin his pro career, being drafted by the Eagles in the second round in the 2019 NFL Draft.
