Penn State Football: 3 Roster Weaknesses facing James Franklin
By Andrew Adair
Drew Allar’s Backup
If 2021 taught Penn State Football fans anything, it should be that you need a competent backup Quarterback at all times. We all witnessed a season suddenly turn from 5-0 to 7-6 after Sean Clifford’s injury against Iowa.
Penn State Football is entering 2023 with a similar situation. Drew Allar himself is inexperienced. Behind him is even less experience. Gone is Christian Veilleux, who saved the day against Rutgers reliving Sean Clifford. As the roster sits now, you have Drew Allar(60 career passing attempts), Beau Pribula(0 snaps), and true-freshman Jaxon Smolik. That’s It.
While Penn State is in a better situation than in 2021, that is solely based on the offensive line is better and the running game is improved. It would be hard for Beau Pribula to be any worse than what we saw from a backup Quarterback against Iowa. That still doesn’t mean that Penn State can’t improve this situation.
If Penn State could somehow find a transfer that has experience who has a goal to go into coaching at the next level instead of playing at the next level would be like finding gold at this point.
