Penn State Football adds Marques Hagans as wide receivers coach
Penn State Football made a key hire to its 2023 coaching staff on Monday Morning.
Reports rang out on Monday morning that Penn State football is expected to hire Marques Hagans as its next wide receivers coach.
Matt Zenitz of On3 was the first to break this big-time story for the Nittany Lions
This was a quick turnaround as former wide receiver coach Taylor Stubblefield was relieved of his duties one week ago on January 15th.
Consistency is the name of the game when it comes to Hagans. This is a man who was born in Newport News, Virginia, attended Hampton high school in Hampton Virginia, and played college football at the University of Virginia from 2001 – 2005. Most notably in 2005, Hagans and UVA took down #4 Florida State in a 26-21 victory. He played both quarterback and wide receiver during his college career.
He then graduated from Virginia and entered the 2006 NFL draft. He was selected in the 5th round pick 144 overall to the St. Louis Rams. He bounced around the NFL for several years playing for the Kansas City Chiefs, Indianapolis Colts, and the Washington Commanders until 2010.
Since his playing days have ended, he joined the UVA coaching staff in 2011 as a Graduate Assistant. Then, in 2013 he was promoted to the Wide Receivers coach and has been in that role ever since.
Hagans has helped WR’s at UVA have very successful careers. One of the more recognizable names being Olamide Zaccheaus who is the all-time leader in receptions at UVA who currently plays for the Atlanta Falcons.
Adding Hagans to the coaching staff reunites him with fellow UVA alum and currently Penn State safeties coach Anthony Poindexter. But also, this is someone who is finally getting a chance at a larger program and sometimes those are the coaches that become super stars… the hidden gems of college football.
The other massive bonus to having Hagans on the coaching staff is the Virginia recruiting pipeline. This is an area where Penn State football has had a lot of success over the years, adding someone who is so credible and knows that area so well only strengthens Penn State’s foothold.
