The Blue-Chip Ratio

While recruiting rankings can sometimes be incorrect for an individual player, 99% of the time (2022 Texas A&M being the other 1%) team success in recruiting will make a difference on the field.

Recruiting classes are often measured by the blue-chip recruit ratio, which is the percentage of the class that is made up by 4 and 5-star recruits. Anything over 60% is considering really good, 75% or more is elite and 90% and up is Alabama and Georgia.

Here are some current blue-chip ratios in the 2023 cycle:

  • Alabama- 96%
  • Ohio State- 95%
  • Florida- 90%
  • Georgia- 85%
  • Notre Dame- 83%
  • Clemson- 76%
  • LSU- 76%
  • Penn State- 70%
  • Texas A&M- 66%
  • Miami- 65%
  • Oregon- 64%
  • Texas- 64%
  • Oklahoma- 63%
  • Tennessee- 52%
  • USC- 50%
  • Michigan- 39%

Penn State Football currently has the eighth highest blue-chip recruit ratio of teams with at least 18 commits. Not only are the Nittany Lions bringing in players, but they’re bringing in talented ones that can help Penn State compete at a national level.

This is a number that needs to continue to increase in the coming recruiting cycles for Penn State Football. While having classes consistently over 90% like Alabama won’t happen, having one class get close to that number could really help.

Between the 2022 and 2023 classes combined, Penn State football has 46 players (two members of the 2022 class are no longer with the program) and 31 of them were blue-chip recruits. That’s good for a 67% ratio.

For comparison, the 2020 and 2021 classes combined had a 40% ratio. Penn State is infusing more talent into its roster, and it’s doing it quickly.
