Penn State Football continues its success in the 2023 recruiting class as signing day nears

Penn State Football continued its successful Tuesday by receiving a commitment from former Northwestern commit DE Mason Robinson.

Robinson announced the tough decision to decommit from Northwestern on Monday afternoon and then announced his commitment to Penn State the next day.

Robinson had been committed to Northwestern since May, and it was a bit of a surprise when he did pick the Wildcats over the Nittany Lions. Penn State Football has done a great job of recruiting Robinson’s high school, the McDonogh School, over the years.

P.J. Mustipher, Curtis Jacobs, D’Von Ellies and Dani Dennis-Sutton are all graduates of the McDonogh School.

This factor, along with the fact that Northwestern went 1-11 this season, were big reasons why Victory Bell Rings identified Robinson as a possible flip candidate back in October.

The likelihood of Robinson flipping increased in the last few weeks when Northwestern fired defensive coordinator Jim O’Neil and defensive line coach Marty Long. Robinson’s two future coaches were now gone.

The 6-foot-4 Robinson is ranked as the No. 64 defensive lineman in the 2023 class and is rated as a high 3-star (0.8817) in the 247 Sports Composite rankings.

While projected to be a defensive end at the next level, it would not be a surprise to see Robinson eventually grow into an interior player.

As a senior this season, Robinson recorded 83 tackles and nine sacks. The productive defender also held offers from Georgia, Miami, Michigan, Oklahoma, Tennessee and he recently picked up an offer from Notre Dame.

Robinson visited Penn State for an official visit this past weekend, and that visit seemed to seal the deal for the Nittany Lions. Robinson was expected to use his official visit to Penn State back in June but committed to Northwestern before that happened.

Robinson is the second commit of the week and the second commit as a result of the official visits this past weekend. Robinson joins Joesph Mupoyi, who is also a defensive lineman as this week’s commits.

The Nittany Lions now have 21 commits in the 2023 class and the class now ranks No. 12 in the nation.
