Penn State Football may be making a move on a former top target that is currently committed elsewhere

Penn State Football received some promising news on Monday when 4-star athlete Rodney Gallagher tweeted he will visit this weekend.

The news of Gallagher’s visit comes less than 24 hours after 4-star wide receiver Ejani Shakir decommitted from the Nittany Lions.

The Uniontown, PA standout was arguably Penn State’s top target at wide receiver before committing to West Virginia back in May. Gallagher’s commitment to West Virginia caught many off guard, because he had official visits planned but decided to cancel them and commit.

Things have not gone smoothly in Morgantown this season, which is why Gallagher may be entertaining other options. It’s year four Neal Brown at West Virginia, but the Mountaineers are currently just 4-7. The football program has seemingly gone backwards under Brown, making it unlikely he survives the offseason as the head coach.

Gallagher is rated as the No. 3 player in the state of Pennsylvania and the No. 28 wide receiver in the nation. His ranking has dipped some over the past few months, as he was rated as the No. 97 player in the nation back in May.

Regardless, the Nittany Lions seem to still like the 5-foot-10 Gallagher and see him as a future option in the slot and possibly on punt returns.

Penn State is trying to put as much talent as possible around young quarterback Drew Allar, and Gallagher would definitely be a key piece in doing just that.

West Virginia will not go down without a fight though. Gallagher is the Mountaineers top commit, and they will do everything in their power to hold on to him, regardless of what the coaching situation is.

If Gallagher flipped to Penn State, the Nittany Lions would have seven of the top eleven recruits in Pennsylvania in the 2023 class committed.
