Penn State football is looking to make its fourth New Year’s Six bowl game in the last seven years.

Penn State football will not make the College Football Playoff in 2022, but it could still make a top-of-the-line bowl game.

The Nittany Lions checked in at No. 11 in the newest College Football Playoff poll, meaning they are at least in the conversation for New Year’s Six bowl game. Even though they are ranked inside the top 12, NY6 bowls do not automatically go to the top 12 teams in the rankings.

There are automatic tie-ins that will allow a couple teams to jump Penn State for a spot in one of the major bowl games.

While this may not matter to some fans, making a NY6 bowl is a huge step back in the right direction for Penn State after going 11-11 the past two seasons. The ultimate goal is to make the Playoff, but this is a strong building block.

There are currently three NY6 bowl games that the Nittany Lions can make: The Rose Bowl, the Orange Bowl and the Cotton Bowl. The path to each is possible, but Penn State will need help from other teams and obviously needs to win out as well.
