Penn State football has worked to build a deeper roster, but some positions still could use more depth.

Penn State football lost a member of its offensive tackle depth on Monday with the report that Maleek McNeil was no longer with the team.

The news of the true freshmen no longer being with the program was reported by Sean Fitz of On3.

McNeil was seen as an intriguing project in the 2022 recruiting class. He was the lowest rated player, not counting punter Alex Bacchetta because punters are rated low, in the class, but was the biggest in terms of size.

McNeil checked into Penn State at 6-foot-7 and 340 pounds. He was not going to see any playing time this year as the strength and conditioning staff worked to reshape his large frame.

No reason was given for his departure.

With McNeil now gone, Penn State only has four offensive linemen left from the 2021 and 2022 recruiting classes. Ideally, you would want four linemen a class, not in two.

Between this, and the likelihood that three current starting offensive linemen may move on after this year, there are reasons to be concerned about the depth of Penn State’s offensive line, but especially at the tackle position.

Let’s take a look at Penn State’s offensive tackle depth for 2023 and beyond and what the staff can do to address it.
