Penn State football is in the process of stacking as many top ten recruiting classes as it can.

The 2023 recruiting cycle is nearing the end, meaning it’s crunch time for the Penn State Football staff.

While there are still two regular season games to be played, some of the focus needs to turn back to recruiting as the early National Signing Day is slated for Dec. 21.

The Nittany Lions currently have 20 commits in their 2023 class. The class, which consists of 14 4-stars and six 3-stars, is ranked No. 14 in the national rankings according to 247 Sports. That is a great class, but James Franklin wants more.

Penn State finished the 2022 class ranked No. 6 in the nation, it was arguably Franklin’s best recruiting class ever. Now, the next step becomes stacking those top ten classes and not just making them a once every few years type thing. It’s time for some consistency.

247 Sports uses a points system to rank the recruiting classes. A class receives more points based off of a recruit’s ranking. The 2022 class finished with 278.66 points, the 2023 class currently has 260.92 points. In 2022, the 260.92 points would have been enough for the No. 10 spot, but some schools are recruiting at a very high clip in 2023.

For Penn State Football to finish in the top ten, it will likely need at least 280 points. Clemson is currently in No. 10 spot with 269 points, and its class probably isn’t finished.

Using the class calculator on 247 Sports site, we can add recruits to Penn State’s 2023 class and see how many points it gives the Nittany Lions. The Nittany Lions are expected to add four to five more commits in this class.

If the class wants a chance to finish inside the top ten, this is the likely route to achieving that goal.
