Citrus Bowl (Jerry Palm, CBS Sports & Richard Johnson Sports Illustrated)

Jerry Palm of CBS Sports and Richard Johnson of Sports Illustrated each have Penn State football returning to another bowl game it recently played in as he has the Nittany Lions facing Ole Miss in the Citrus Bowl on Jan. 2.

This projection is somewhat disappointing because it does not have Penn State in a New Year’s Six bowl. Palm has Washington jumping Penn State after its win over Oregon. Considering Washington’s last two games are against Colorado and Washington St., the Huskies are likely going 10-2.

Ole Miss is another team likely to go 10-2. The Rebels barely lost to Alabama this past weekend, falling short 30-24. Ole Miss has seen vast improvements under head coach Lane Kiffin. The Rebels average 36.1 points per game and rush for nearly 260 yards per game. This would be another tough test for Penn State’s defense, especially if players opt out.

Ole Miss may be going through a transition phase by the time this game comes around though. There are plenty of rumors out there about Kiffin taking the Auburn head coaching job. It’s unclear how the team would react if that did in fact happen.

The last time Penn State played in the Citrus Bowl, it lost to Kentucky 27-24 on New Year’s Day 2019. It was the last game in the storied career of quarterback Trace McSorley.

While not making a New Year’s Six would be disappointing, no one would complain about a trip to Orlando.
