Penn State Football: 3 things we learned from the win over Indiana
1. The quarterback gameplan is clear
Many fans wish that Penn State football would move on from starting quarterback Sean Clifford in favor of promising freshman Drew Allar.
It does not look like that will be the case, at least for now.
Clifford received the start on Saturday and was kept in even after throwing an interception early in the game. Clifford finished his day going 15-23 for 229 yards and the interception.
Clifford stayed in the game until the third quarter when the Nittany Lions held a 31-7 lead. By then, it was pretty clear that the Hoosiers were not a threat to comeback in this game.
From there, Allar took over. Allar went 9-12 for 75 yards and two touchdowns. The staff allowed him to throw the ball, even in situations where they would normally run.
It seems that this will be the formula for the quarterback for the rest of the season. James Franklin and his staff still feel that Clifford gives the best chance to win, but at least they are acknowledging that the young Allar needs reps and that they need to be willing to pull Clifford earlier in games than in years past.
This may be the best way to go in order to finish the year 10-2 and still give Allar valuable experience.
