Penn State Football: Is it time for a quarterback change?
Penn State football will try to finish the 2022 season strong, but will it be with a new man under center?
Penn State football lost to Ohio State on Saturday, officially ending the team’s Big Ten title and playoff hopes.
The game was an odd one for the Nittany Lions. They were quickly behind 10-0, climbed back to take a 21-16 lead in the fourth and then somehow lost 44-31.
Starting quarterback Sean Clifford had one of the wildest days of his long career. The sixth-year man went 32-47 for 371 yards, three touchdowns, three interceptions and a lost fumble. He was more or less the reason Penn State was down 10-0, then was the reason the Nittany Lions led 21-16 and then was a big reason as to why the final score was 41-31.
When Clifford turned the ball over, Penn State struggled, when he didn’t, the team played as well as they played all year.
Many fans already wanted to move on to 5-star true freshman Drew Allar at quarterback, and this performance only solidified those feelings. But why do fans want Allar? Is it because of Clifford’s performance or because two losses takes the Nittany Lions out of any title contention and it may be time to look to the future?
For most, it’s probably a combination of both.
So, should James Franklin and Penn State football move on to the future of the program in the remaining four games? The Nittany Lions should be favored in all four matchups, regardless of who the quarterback is.
Favored doesn’t always mean a definite win though. There is still a fair amount of unknown with the young Allar. There is some risk in moving on to him.
Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of making a change at quarterback and go over a few solutions to the problem.
