Cause for concern #3 – Ohio State’s third down defense

Heading into last week, Minnesota had (statistically) the best third down defense in the country, but the Nittany Lions were able to have success against them. Can they do it again?

Entering this week’s matchup with Ohio State, the Buckeyes have the second best third down defense in the country. They’re allowing opponents to convert just 24.5% of third down attempts.

If the Penn State offense gets themselves into too many third and long situations, things may not go too well–especially considering Ohio State is third in the Big Ten with 19 sacks so far on the season.

When Sean Clifford is well-protected and is comfortable in the pocket, he can do a lot of good things. It’s when there’s consistent pressure when he starts to make poor decisions.

The Buckeyes’ success on third downs on defense could create issues for the Nittany Lions if they do not stay ahead of schedule. One turnover could be the difference in this game, and Sean Clifford having to force something on third down could lead to that turnover.
