Does Penn State Football need to find another Running Back?
2023 Solution (Part 2)
This is pretty simple, keep recruiting running backs in the 2023 class.
While the cycle is coming to a close, there are still plenty of uncommitted running backs out there. Guys committed to other schools are also a possibility as coaching changes seem to be happening weekly at this point. Decommitments will happen.
The Nittany Lions currently have 26 confirmed offers out to running backs, only four of them are currently not committed to a school. This means Penn State will either have to sit and wait for a decommitment or actively identify and evaluate new targets.
The latter is far more likely to happen as Penn State likes to be prepared and have a plan in place.
Going this route over the transfer portal has its benefits because the player won’t be a one- or two-year rental like the portal addition would be. Therefore, the depth is built up for not only 2023, but the years that follow as well.
The issue is that there’s guarantee that the recruit Penn State lands is ready to go at the start of year one. This late in the cycle, it’s unlikely Penn State finds guys of Singleton and Allen’s caliber who are capable of stepping right in a performing.
In the end, if the Nittany Lions have enough room on the roster, they may have to go after a second running back in the 2023 class and still target someone in the portal. If Lee comes back, the portal portion of this solution would be voided.
