Penn State Football: game balls from the Nittany Lions’ win over Ohio
By Nick Kreiser
Penn State Football rolled to a comfortable 46-10 win over the Ohio Bobcats on Saturday, so there were plenty of players who caught the fans’ attention.
However, even though this is about as unofficial as it gets, we only have three game balls to give out: one for each phase of the game.
So here are our three game ball winners for Penn State Football from their win over Ohio.
Offense – Nick Singleton (RB)
This one is no surprise.
True freshman sensation Nick Singleton has been the talk of the town since his breakout performance against Ohio on Saturday afternoon.
Singleton finished the day with 179 rushing yards on just 10 carries (17.9 yards per carry), and he found the endzone twice.
It was so refreshing to finally see some explosive runs out of a Penn State Football running back.
Through two games, Singleton leads the nation in one very important category.
The Nittany Lions have clearly found their No. 1 running back now, and we should be seeing much more of Nick Singleton out there.
It’s certainly exciting to think about what he can do throughout the season and throughout his career as he continues to improve.
Defense – Ji’Ayir Brown (S)
Ji’Ayir Brown quietly had himself a great game on Saturday.
Tyler Elsdon led the team with six tackles on the game, but four others were tied for second with five tackles; Brown was one of those four.
Of those five tackles by Brown, four of them were solo tackles, and he also added a half tackle for loss and a pass deflection for good measure.
Brown is one of the best defensive backs in the Big Ten, and this type of performance is nothing for him. Regardless, he did plenty to earn himself a Victory Bell Rings game ball for his outing against Ohio.
Special teams – Barney Amor (P)
Barney Amor has won a Victory Bell Rings game ball for special teams in back-to-back weeks to begin the 2022 season.
In week two against Ohio, Amor punted three times for an average of 49 yards per punt–an improvement from his 46.9 yards per punt average from week one. Plus, he downed two of those punts inside the 20, one of which was a beauty that he stopped on the one that set up the safety on the following play.
As always, we hope Penn State doesn’t have to use their punter too often, but it’s nice to know they have Barney Amor at their disposal when they do have to punt, because he’s been excellent thus far.
A case could be made for Parker Washington to have won the special team game ball, as he averaged 11.5 yards per return across four punt returns, but it just doesn’t get any better than checking one up on the one like Amor did.
