The winner of the middle linebacker position battle

The competition to be the next middle linebacker for LBU has been one of the storylines of the offseason for Penn State Football, and we finally have an answer as to who won that battle.

It’s redshirt sophomore, Tyler Elsdon.

Elsdon is a former three star from Ashland, PA, and is a highly intelligent football player: perfect to be the quarterback of the defense.

Back in the spring of 2021, he was complemented for his football IQ, and it showed last season. He did not play a ton, but when he was in during garbage time–as well as in the Outback Bowl–he was constantly in pre-snap communication with his teammates, making sure they were where they needed to be.

His competition at middle linebacker–Kobe King–will surely see plenty of opportunities as well and will hopefully help make this linebacking corps deeper than many anticipate.

As for Elsdon, he will be like having a coach on the field for Manny Diaz’s defense, and will surely be someone that fans will enjoy watching play. I expect he and Curtis Jacobs to be an excellent duo of box linebackers for the Nittany Lions.
