An Eye on the Future

This decision by Penn State’s staff does not have impact on just this season, but the ones that will follow.

The staff knows how talented Allar is and that he likely is the future of this program.

Giving him the chance to be the backup right away says that while the staff is all in on the 2022 season, they’re not going to ignore the future.

Penn State’s roster sets up nicely for the next few years. There are plenty of impact players with multiple years of eligibility left, they just brough in the No. 6 recruiting class in the nation for 2022 and the 2023 recruiting class is currently ranked No. 12.

In other words, there’s going to be a lot of talent on this roster and it’s not going anywhere for a while.

Giving young guys like Allar and running backs Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen key reps right away will not only benefit the Nittany Lions in 2022, but also 2023 and 2024.

Having Allar directly over Clifford’s shoulder every week will also make him a better quarterback. Regardless of what some fans may think of Clifford’s play, the truth is he’s a sixth-year quarterback who knows how to prepare.

Allar will now be able to learn from one of the most experienced quarterbacks in the history of college football. Another added benefit.
