Penn State Football: Predicting the outcome of each game this season
Week 11: At Rutgers
Rutgers remains one of two Big Ten team to not beat Penn State since the Scarlet Knights joined the conference in 2014.
Last year, backup quarterback Christian Veilleux stepped in and helped the Nittany Lions crush Rutgers 28-0.
Offensively, Rutgers was one of the worst teams in the country. They averaged just 19.7 points per game, which was 120th in the country.
Noah Vedral returns at quarterback for another season, but he will be pushed by redshirt freshman Gavin Wimsatt. Neither really impressed last year, with Vedral completing just 59.5% of his passes for 1,854 yards with seven touchdowns and seven interceptions. Wimsatt saw limited time but completed just 42.9% of his passes with two interceptions.
The team’s best wide receiver, Bo Melton is also now in the NFL. The offensive line is also a work in progress with the Knights having to bring in three grad transfers.
The defense was not bad last year, giving up 25.6 points per game, but they were far from great.
Leading tackler Olakunie Fatukasi is no longer here. Neither are the other two contributing linebackers from last year in Drew Singleton and Tyshon Fogg.
Most of the other key contributors from this unit do come back though, which should give them some confidence going into the year.
Rutgers badly wants to beat Penn State, especially at home. The roster just doesn’t seem talented enough to keep up though.
Prediction: PSU 30 Rutgers 10
