Penn State Football rushing records

Neither of Penn State’s two veteran running backs (Keyvone Lee and Devyn Ford) are remotely close to the career rushing yard or touchdown records, and I don’t foresee anybody sniffing Larry Johnson’s 2,087-yard single season rushing record or Lydell Mitchell’s single season touchdown record of 26, so what rushing records can realistically fall this season?

The freshman ones.

Saquon Barkley currently holds the program record for rushing yards by a true freshman with 1,076, and if Nick Singleton is as advertised and the offensive line improves, Saquon’s record will be broken this season.

The school record for rushing touchdowns is held by Noah Cain, who found the endzone eight times in 2019 as a true freshman, breaking what was at the time Barkley’s record of seven.

That is another mark that is attainable by the highly touted Singleton.

Even if he does not get the bulk of the carries right out of the gate, he can still set both of those records. Barkley only got two carries in the first game of his career, and also missed a couple games that year with an injury; and Cain was banged up for part of his freshman campaign and also split carries with Journey Brown, Ricky Slade, and Devyn Ford.
