Penn State football got a lot of bad news in a short amount of time on Thursday afternoon.

In less than an hour on Thursday, one Penn State football commit would decommit and two top targets would choose other schools.

Penn State’s goal of collecting back-to-back top ten recruiting classes is now looking a lot more challenging.

Let’s take a look at what went down.

4:04 p.m.

Penn State’s quarterback commit Marcus Stokes announces he’s flipping to Florida. This comes as a massive shock as just last week, Stokes told reporters he was not talking to other schools.

Stokes is from Florida, so this makes sense. The Gators also were in desperate need of a quarterback in their 2023 class.

With the 4-star now gone, Penn State needs to quickly identify new targets at quarterback. This loss doesn’t hurt all that much considering Drew Allar and Beau Pribula will be on campus through at least the end of the 2024 season.

4:40 p.m.

Penn State’s top running back target Treyaun Webb commits to Florida as well.

Penn State was seen as the leader for Webb after official visits were complete, so this again is a shock.

It looks as though the two Florida products had this whole thing planned behind the scenes.

Losing Webb hurts, but the Nittany Lions still have another top target out there in London Montgomery. Let’s also not forget that Penn State signed two top ten running backs in the 2022 cycle.

Penn State usually does well with running backs in Florida thanks to running backs coach Ja’Juan Seider’s connections down there. It just wasn’t meant to be this time.

4:44 p.m.

Just minutes later, 4-star athlete Cam Seldon committed to Tennessee over Penn State.

The Virginia product was towards the top of Penn State’s target board, so this is a disappointing loss. Unlike with Stokes and Webb, there aren’t many replacements for Seldon. He was a unique athlete with speed that could play on either side of the ball.

Penn State will likely keep trying with Seldon until he signs in December.

Penn State’s 2023 class still ranks fifth in the national rankings, but now with only 15 commits.
