Penn State Wrestling’s Nick Lee named 2021-2022 Penn State Male Athlete of the Year

Well, you can now chalk up yet another category that Cael Sanderson and Penn State Wrestling dominates. At this point I think it would be easier to list off the awards, titles, and other honors the Nittany Lions don’t win on the mat.

And no, it’s not sweatiest team locker room and most band aids used by a Penn State athletics team.

Of course, I’m talking about the yearly award handed out to the best Penn State athletes.

Nick Lee along with standout softball pitcher Bailey Parshall were recently named the Penn State Athletes of the Year for the 2021-2022 seasons.

As everyone knows by now, in his senior season Nick Lee was able to win his first Big Ten title and he brought home his second consecutive NCAA title at 141. Lee also won his 100th match at Penn State and he became the first Nittany Lion ever to be a five-time All-American.

Going back to what I previously alluded to, Nick Lee is now one of nine Nittany Lion grapplers to win the Penn State Male Athlete of the Year. Roman Bravo-Young won the award last season and Bo Nickal won it the previous year, just to name a handful.

All in all, the nine wrestlers have accounted for a total of 11 Male Athlete of the Year honors. And this year, it couldn’t have gone to a more deserving candidate.

My only wish is that Penn State would have used a picture of Nick Lee with his customary busted nose, a black eye, and his hand raised in the middle of the ring. Because that’s how I will always remember Nick Lee, and that’s exactly what makes him an all-time Penn State great.
