Penn State Football: ranking the best offensive players of the James Franklin era
By Nick Kreiser
4. Chris Godwin (wide receiver, 2014-2016)
Throughout his three-year stint in State College, Chris Godwin was a staple of the Penn State offense.
As a true freshman in 2014, he had a big game in the win over Boston College in the Pinstripe Bowl, which signaled a return to normalcy for Penn State Football. In that game, he caught seven passes for 140 yards, including a 72-yard touchdown.
As a sophomore, he had career highs in both receptions (69) and receiving yards (1,101), which led him to receive a second team All-Big Ten selection.
In his third and final year, Chris Godwin hauled in 11 touchdowns and helped the Nittany Lions win their first conference championship since 2008, while once again receiving all-conference honors.
His excellent collegiate career allowed him to become a third round NFL Draft pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he has since won a Super Bowl ring – along with Donovan Smith.
Between all of his big plays, acrobatic catches in traffic, and all-conference level statistics, Chris Godwin is absolutely one of the best offensive players of the James Franklin era.
