A quick look at the Penn State Football 2022 non-conference schedule
Week 4: Central Michigan
After squaring off against Auburn on the road, PSU returns to Beaver Stadium in week four to take on the Central Michigan Chippewas. Like Ohio, Central Michigan is not considered a threat to Penn State heading into the season–the Chippewas are not seen as a national competitor by any means, and are a middle-tier MAC program.
Unlike Ohio, Central Michigan is competitive within its league, finishing the 2021 season with a 9-4 record and a win in the Sun Bowl. CMU has been a .500 team or better for seven of the past ten seasons, making Central Michigan one of the better MAC programs but still average at the Group of 5 level.
Led by former Florida Gators head coach Jim McElwain, Central Michigan will undoubtedly come into week four with a purpose and a sound game plan–something McElwain has been known for throughout his college football coaching career. McElwain does have some experience in Beaver stadium from his time on Jim Harbaugh’s staff at Michigan.
Week four’s game does not have an official start time just yet, though it is safe to assume that it will start at noon or 3:30, depending on the rest of the Big Ten’s scheduling. Regardless of the time, it is safe to assume that Penn State will handle its business decisively against an outmatched CMU squad.
Central Michigan will be the Nittany Lions’ final out-of-conference “tune-up” game, and if PSU can escape with a perfect record, the team is in good shape to have a far better season than 2021. Following Penn State’s showdown with CMU, the Nittany Lions then host Northwestern to open up the month of October–what will likely be another win for PSU football.
