Staff Picks: Which Penn State Football away games should fans attend?
Alec Whitaker (Editor/Football)
1.Auburn
Auburn takes the top spot on my list. For starters, it’s unlikely the Nittany Lions ever travel back down here again in most-if not all- of our lifetimes. From videos, the stadium seems awesome down there and the fanbase for the most part is pretty cool. I even recently wrote a piece of how passionate the Auburn fanbase is, maybe that passion could come off as hostile, but I wouldn’t fear. I heard the bar scene isn’t the best, but the tailgates make up for it.
2. Purdue
Penn State goes to West Lafayette every six years or so. The fact it doesn’t happen that often is why I have it ahead of Michigan. I also think the atmosphere will be pretty good. It’s the first game of the season, a night game and on a Thursday, this should have the place jumping and makes it a little unique as the Nittany Lions rarely play on Thursdays. Whenever I think of Purdue, I think of that insane upset over Ohio State in 2018 and how the place was rocking. I hope the result isn’t the same, but it makes for a fun environment.
3. Michigan
Penn State goes to Ann Arbor every other year, which is why it’s not that special of a trip compared to my No. 1 and 2. The Big House is definitely on the bucket list because of how big it is, but the environment isn’t as great as it can be. Ann Arbor usually ranks high on college town lists and the Wolverines will be pretty good this year. If you have the opportunity to go, go, but if you have to pick just one away game, maybe not this one.
4. Indiana
When I think about Indiana, I think about that empty stadium in 2020 and that supposed two-point conversion. Just hate to think about it. The atmosphere at the stadium is borderline depressing and the Hoosiers won’t be too good in 2022. As my colleague Chris mentioned above, Bloomington is a great college town, but at that point I’d rather just watch the game from State College if I’m just going for the college town experience.
5. Rutgers
Terrible atmosphere, hostile fans and a bad team. Unless you live in New Jersey, and this is your only opportunity to see a game, it’s not an ideal trip. I’m all for Nittany Nation taking over other team’s stadiums, so I hope that is the case here again, but nothing about this game screams “bucket list” or “must see”. I hope the Nittany Lions are still in the Big Ten race when this game comes around, because then everyone should be there. But we’ll be there for the Nittany lions, and nothing else.
