Did Penn State Basketball accidently state that their roster is set?
By Evan Smith
Penn State Basketball announced the jersey numbers for their freshmen and incoming players earlier today on Twitter.
Kanye Clary will wear No. 0, Kebba Njie will don the No. 3, Jameel Brown’s kit number will be No. 5, Evan Mahaffey No. 12, and Demetrius Lilley No. 14. Incoming players from the transfer portal include Andrew Funk who will wear No. 10, and Camren Wynter who will wear No. 11.
It’s notable that No. 11 will be worn again after Jaheam Cornwall (ugh) wore it last year following in the footsteps of PSU great Lamar Stevens. Some fans were hoping Stevens’ jersey would be raised to the rafters of the Bryce Jordan Center but that seems unlikely now (and probably was always unlikely given Penn State’s lack of propensity of retiring numbers).
Today’s announcement raises an interesting question, and that is – does this mean that Penn State Basketball’s 2022-23 roster is set?
Their frontcourt is incredibly thin at this point, with the only returning power forward/center being Jevonnie Scott, the former junior college player who had eligibility and injury issues last year. When he was on the court, he averaged more fouls per game (1.5) than points (1.4).
Returning players Seth Lundy and Myles Dread (who is coming off shoulder surgery) are forwards, but neither can play nor guard opponents with their back to the basket. The rest of the frontcourt is all incoming freshmen.
It had been rumored that Penn State was still searching the transfer portal for frontcourt help, but does today’s announcement mean the roster is set for next year? Only time will tell…
