Penn State Football: post-spring reasons for optimism for the Nittany Lions
By Nick Kreiser
A much deeper quarterback room for Penn State Football
Undoubtedly, a deeper quarterback room last season could have saved Penn State Football from losses against Iowa and Illinois, but that should not be an issue again in 2022.
There are no changes at the top of the depth chart with Sean Clifford returning, but the three guys behind him all have bright futures, beginning with Christian Veilleux, who is presumably the backup at this point.
He has already seen more relevant game action heading into this season than Ta’Quan Roberson did heading into last season, and not only that, but he looked poised and comfortable in those appearances.
Behind him is Drew Allar and Beau Pribula, both of which are very talented in different ways. Allar is a prototypical, gunslinging pocket-passer, whereas Pribula is a smaller and more athletic dual-threat quarterback.
Whether it be an unfortunate injury or poor performance from Clifford, there is not much of a drop off behind him, so James Franklin and Mike Yurcich can be comfortable turning to someone else. Plus, the competition between the three young quarterbacks will only help them each improve and bring out the best in one another, something they haven’t had as much of in the past with some less talented quarterback rooms.
