Grading Penn State Football’s Transfer Additions
Wide Receiver Mitchell Tinsley
Mitchell Tinsley was Penn State’s first transfer addition, announcing his intentions to join the Nittany Lions back in December.
Tinsley was a key part of Western Kentucky’s high-powered offense in 2021. He recorded 87 catches for 1,402 yards and 14 touchdowns as Western Kentucky’s No. 2 wide out. Tinsley decided to leave for a few reasons, but one was that skilled quarterback Bailey Zappe was off to the NFL.
Considering Penn State was losing star wide receiver Jahan Dotson to the NFL, adding Tinsley was a wise move. Was it a necessary one? Probably not, but the fact that the staff didn’t sit there and be content with what they had, says a lot about their desire to win.
Tinsley’s numbers were insane in 2021, but it’s probably unfair to think he will replicate them in 2022. Western Kentucky was an air raid offense, Penn State, despite struggling to run the ball in 2021, is not. Also expecting him to fill Dotson’s shoes is a tall task.
Tinsley is incredibly talented and will give the Nittany Lions a big-play threat to go along with Parker Washington, Keandre Lambert-Smith and others. This is an exciting addition and one that needs to be made if you want to compete with high flying offenses like Ohio State’s.
Quarterback Sean Clifford must be pleased that he has another weapon to work with, and the Nittany Lions have lessened the blow of losing Dotson.
