Penn State Football: 4 reasons Mike Yurcich’s offense will be more effective in 2022
By Chris Snyder
Reason No. 4 – Mike Yurcich is a good coach
I’ll lead off with this block of stats.
Passing: 304.7 yds/game
Rushing: 180.2 yds/game
Scoring: 39.7 pts/game
Any ideas what this is? And no, they are not the most recent stats for my NCAA 14 dynasty on my PS3.
These are the average stats of a Mike Yurcich lead offense in the eight years prior to coming to Penn State. In those eight years, his offense averaged a staggering 484.9 yards and almost 40 points per game.
In the 2021 season, that would put Yurcich’s average offense right at No. 8 right behind Alabama. Again, this is just his average offense.
But then there’s this.
Passing: 268.5 yds/game
Rushing: 107.8 yds/game
Scoring: 25.0 pts/game
I guarantee you know what these numbers are, so I won’t insult your intelligence.
These numbers represent the second lowest passing yards, lowest rushing yards, and lowest average points scored of Mike Yurcich’s career. Did he come to Penn State and all of a sudden forget how to coach?
No.
And I know what you might be yelling at me. “But Chris, MY coached seven of those years in the Big 12!! They don’t play defense!!”
True, but if you remember, Yurcich was the offensive coordinator at Ohio State during the 2019 season. During that season, the Buckeyes put up an average of 530.4 total yards and 46.9 points per game against the mighty Big Ten defenses.
That fact is this, Mike Yurcich has a brilliant offensive mind and he’s proven at the FBS level that he can run an effective offense, which is exactly why I have the utmost faith he will turn things around for Penn State in the upcoming season.
However, in the off chance this doesn’t happen, I wouldn’t be so quick to point any fingers at Mike Yurcich as the reason why.
