Tariq Castro-Fields – cornerback

Round 6 – pick 221 – San Francisco 49ers

With the final pick of the sixth round, the San Francisco 49ers selected former Nittany Lion, Tariq Castro-Fields.

Over the course of five seasons, Castro-Fields appeared in 52 games for Penn State Football, starting in 30 of them, making him one of the more experienced cornerbacks in the draft.

While he never really flashed, Castro-Fields was very steady and solid for the Nittany Lions, earning an All-Big Ten third-team selection in 2019, and honorable mention selections in 2020 and 2021.

Tariq will join a 49ers team that has been one of the best in the NFC over the past few seasons, with a Super Bowl appearance and a pair of conference championship appearances since 2019.

The former Penn State Football cornerback will certainly have his work cut out for him to make the 40-man roster on such a talented team. If he does, he will also have his hands full lining up across from some of the uber-talented wide receivers in the NFC West, such as Cooper Kupp, DeAndre Hopkins, DK Metcalf, and former Nittany Lion – Allen Robinson.

He has some improvements to make to be a consistent contributor at the next level, especially in run-support and open field tackling, but Tariq Castro-Fields has the tools to be a solid cornerback in the NFL for a long time.
