Penn State Wrestling’s Max Dean wins his first NCAA Title by beating Iowa’s Jacob Warner in the 197 finals
Max Dean takes down Iowa’s Jacob Warner for the second time this season, however this time it was for the title at 197 in the 2022 NCAA Finals, adding the hardware to Penn State Wrestling’s trophy case.
This gives Dean his first ever NCAA title as he previously finished runner-up at 184 in the 2019 NCAA Championships.
Dean’s win also gives Penn State Wrestling five individual titles in the 2022 NCAA Wrestling Championships.
I have a running joke that Dean is really a doctor who specializes in the human anatomy and how far it can be pushed. Well tonight Max gave Warner a PHD in kicking butt and taking names later as he was out to prove the result from earlier this season wasn’t a fluke.
Let’s look at a recap of the exciting match that Max Dean delivered another title to Penn State Wrestling!
Dean and Warner locked horns in the center of the match after the opening whistle blew and each guy was working to find an opening and get to their offense.
Neither guy took a committed shot for the majority of the first period and the match went into the second period tied 0-0.
Dean started the second period in top position and Warner was able to free himself quickly to take the lead 1-0. With a minute remaining in the second, Max tried to go on the attack to get a takedown.
But nothing was there and the match went to the final period with Warner up 1-0.
Dean started the third period in the bottom position and he also freed himself early to square up the match 1-1. With both wrestlers going toe to toe, one of them needed a takedown to take control of the match.
And Max was the one to take advantage of a bad shot by Warner and he snagged the takedown at the top of the mat to take the lead 3-1.
With 15 seconds remaining in the match Dean let Warner up and the clock ticked away.
Max Dean wins his first NCAA Championship as the Nittany Lions put an exclamation point on the 2022 NCAA Championships!
Even though it seems like Max Dean has been in college as long as Tommy Callahan III, this past year was only his redshirt junior season. So it’s very possible the Penn State faithful will see more bow and arrows in the future from the talented grappler.
And that’s fun to think about!
