Round of 16 Matches – Championship Bracket

133
No. 1 Roman Bravo-Young (PSU) vs. No. 16 Josh Koderhandt (NAVY)

Result: Roman Bravo-Young fall over Josh Koderhandt 4:45

RBY got things started with a quick takedown in the first period and Koderhandt barely had a chance to get his head above water for the remainder of the mat.

Roman seemingly rode Josh the entire first period and it continued in the second period as he had a 4-0 lead. Then at the top of the mat, RBY was able to catch his opponent and turn his back to the mat.

A couple of seconds later the referee slapped the mat and Roman got the pin.

Penn State wrestlers have now earned three falls in their last five matches and this is exactly what the doctor ordered as far as team points.

Next up for RBY is a quarterfinals match against No. 25 Brian Courtney (UVA).

141
No. 1 Nick Lee (PSU) vs. No. 16 Quinn Kinner (RID)

Result: Nick Lee dec over Quinn Kinner 9-2

Are thePenn State Wrestling faithful allowed to be disappointed in only a decision victory by Nick Lee?

Well based on the bonus points-a-thon Penn State wrestlers have tacked onto the scoreboard, it’s kind of hard not to be expecting more. But of course this was far from a disappointing result because at this stage of the wrestling season any win is a good win.

And Nick Lee was in complete control from the very beginning with a workman like performance.

Lee’s next match will be in the quarterfinals against No. 8 Grant Willits (ORST).

149
No. 13 Beau Bartlett (PSU) vs. No. 4 Sammy Sasso (OSU)

Result: Sammy Sasso dec over Beau Bartlett 6-4

And as it always seems to be when these two toe the line, the match was a tight one.

Unfortunately for Beau, he just couldn’t get past Sasso once again. But look, not many wrestlers can because Sasso is one of the elite in the nation at 149.

Next up for Bartlett is a trip to the consolation bracket where he’ll face No. 19 Yahya Thomas (NU).

174
No. 1 Carter Starocci (PSU) vs. No. 16 Adam Kemp (CP)

Result: Carter Starocci dec over Adam Kemp 10-4

Carter used a pair of takedowns in both the first and second period to open up a 5-1 lead heading into the final period.

Starocci put constant pressure on Kemp the entire match and you could tell it was a matter of time before he took complete control. Which is exactly what happened as Carter earned his third takedown of the match following a Kemp escape.

Another takedown by Starocci extended his lead to 9-4 but he wasn’t able to land the major decision and he walked off the mat a winner 10-4.

Carter next faces No. 9 Mikey Labriola (NEB) in the quarterfinals.

184
No. 2 Aaron Brooks (PSU) vs. No. 15 Hunter Bolen (VT)

Result: Aaron Brooks dec over Hunter Bolen 9-1

The energy in this match was set to “full tilt” from the opening whistle as both guys attempted to exert their will on the other.

Brooks then got deep penetration on Bolen for the opening takedown and Aaron almost had Hunter in a dangerous position. However the first period ended with Brooks on top with the 2-0 lead.

Aaron continued to work in tight against Bolen for another takedown following an escape to push his lead to 5-0 in the second period. A second stall warning on Bolen gave Brooks another point as the second period ended with Aaron up 6-0.

Brooks ultimately cruised to the 9-1 win and he moves on.

Aaron will next face No. 7 Kaleb Romero (OSU) in the quarterfinals.

197
No. 1 Max Dean (PSU) vs. No. 17 Jay Aiello (UVA)

Result: Aaron Brooks dec over Jay Aiello 4-2

Holy cow was this an insane match.

Following a scoreless first period, Aiello flipped a reversal in the second period to take the lead 2-0. And in the process of his ride, it appeared he may have gotten a two count for a near fall on Dean.

Following a quick review it was determined no points should be awarded and the action continued with Dean in the bottom position.

Dean fought his way out for the escape and then snagged a takedown of his own to take the lead 3-2 late in the match. Max then rode Aiello out for the remainder of the match and pulled out the 4-2 win with the additional riding time point.

Next up for Dean is a quarterfinals match against No. 8 Lou Deprez (BING).

285
No. 4 Greg Kerkvliet (PSU) vs. No. 13 Tate Orndorff (OSU)

Result: Greg Kerkvliet maj dec over Tate Orndorff 10-1

Kerk was a man on a mission in this match and it was about as one sided as you can get without someone’s back being on the mat.

At the end of the match, Greg ended up piling on a whopping 5 minutes and 23 seconds of riding time.

Wow.

Next up for Kerkvliet is No. 12 Christian Lance (NEB) in the quarterfinals.
