Breaking down the action No. 1 Penn State Wrestling saw in Session II of the 2022 NCAA Wrestling Championships

The Nittany Lions finished the first session of the 2022 NCAA Championships by going 7-2 and leading the pack with 15.5 team points. The Iowa Hawkeyes and Michigan Wolverines were tied in second place with 12.5 team points apiece.

Well the night session of the first day of the NCAA’s is typically where the rubber meets the road so let’s see how Penn State faired on the evening.

Consolation Matches

125
No. 16 Drew Hildebrandt (PSU) vs.No. 32 Dominic LaJoie (COR)

Result: Drew Hildebrandt dec over Dominic LaJoie 3-1

Drew clung to a 1-0 lead in the third period and it looked like my bold predictions for the NCAA Championships were a little too bold.

But credit to Hildebrandt, because he fought hard the rest of the match and got his first takedown of the tournament on the far left side of the match late in the third period. Following a blood timeout, Drew took the top position on LaJoie and almost rode him out until the final whistle.

Dominic squirmed out for the late escape but it was too little too late and Drew won the match 3-1.

Next up for Hildebrandt is another match in the consolation bracket against former Nittany Lion, No. 15 Brody Teske (UNI).

157
No. 16 Brady Berge (PSU) vs. No. 33 Derek Holschlag (UNI)

Result: Brady Berge maj dec over Derek Holschlag 15-7

Berge got off to a great start in this match by getting two quick takedowns in the first period to open up with a 4-1 lead. Brady further pushed the action in the top position on Holschlag and the second period started with Berge up 6-1.

Brady piled more points on in the second period and the match went into the third period with him up 10-5. Holschlag worked free for an escape but Berge tacked on another takedown and his lead was 12-7 with short time in the final period.

Again Berge pushed the pace and he ultimately won the match with an impressive major decision 15-7.

Next up for Berge is another match in the consolation bracket against No. 22 Dazjon Casto (CIT).
