Penn State Football’s 2023 recruiting class got a bit stronger when commit Jven Williams was elevated to five-star status

Penn State Football 2023 offensive line commit Jven Williams received his fifth star from ON3 on Thursday morning.

While the rankings are not yet updated, Greg Pickel of Blue White Illustrated says that the move will make Williams the top interior lineman in ON3’s rankings.

Williams committed to the Nittany Lions back on Feb. 5, becoming the eighth member of Penn State Football’s 2023 recruiting class. Listed at 6-foot-4 and 290 pounds, Williams is rated as the No. 1 player in Pennsylvania by ON3 and 247 Sports.

Penn State is now set to sign the top player in the state for the second straight recruiting cycle, after signing 5-star running back Nick Singleton in 2022.

Where Penn State Football’s 2023 recruiting class now stands

The future of Penn State Football’s offensive line is in good hands with Williams and Alex Birchmeier, who is ranked as the No. 1 interior offensive lineman in the 247 Sports composite rankings for 2023. Joining these two in the class is 3-star interior offensive lineman Joshua Miller and 3-star offensive tackle Anthony Donkoh.

With three interior linemen in the fold, offensive line coach Phil Trautwein will direct his attention to the tackle position. Targets at the position include 5-star Kadyn Proctor, 4-star Samson Okunlola and 4-star Evan Link.

James Franklin and his staff are coming off of arguably their best recruiting class at Penn State, after signing the No. 7 class in the country in 2022. That class included three 5-star recruits in QB Drew Allar, the aforementioned Singleton and DE Dani Dennis-Sutton. Franklin is now backing up that class with the fifth-ranked class in the 2023 cycle.

Penn State Football has never signed two composite 5-star offensive linemen in the same recruiting class, but with Williams and Birchmeier, it looks like that streak may end in 2023, depending on future ranking updates.
