Question #5 – Will Penn State Football see any more players enter the transfer portal?

This is not so much a question of will anyone else enter the portal, as much as it who will enter the portal?

It is common for players across the country to enter the transfer portal after spring practice, if they are unhappy with what the depth chart looks like. In the spring of 2019, when it looked as if Sean Clifford was going to win the starting quarterback job, Tommy Stevens decided to enter the transfer portal to search for a place where he could play in his final year of eligibility.

Don’t worry, this is a commonality across all of college football. Every team is losing multiple players in the portal each offseason, not just Penn State. The upside of this, is that a team usually loses a player who would not have been a starter or seen much action, so it opens up a scholarship for them to bring in a transfer at a position of need.

One position where the Nittany Lions could potentially see someone enter the portal is at running back. Noah Cain already transferred home to LSU back in January, but Penn State Football still returns three running backs from last year’s team, along with bringing in two more in the 2022 recruiting class.

Could one of those returning running backs transfer after spring practice if they feel they are being passed over by one of the freshmen? Keyvone Lee will be one of the top two backs to begin the season, so he is likely to remain in State College for at least one more season. However, could Devyn Ford or Caziah Holmes look to transfer if they are jumped by Nicholas Singleton and/or Kaytron Allen?

The Nittany Lions also return their top three tight ends from 2021: Brenton Strange, Theo Johnson, and Tyler Warren. Behind them on the depth chart is Khalil Dinkins, who redshirted last season. Jerry Cross also joins this group as an early enrollee from the 2022 recruiting class.

Is there a chance that one of those returning tight ends, who each have multiple years of eligibility remaining, look to transfer someplace that they could be the primary option?

When the time comes, which Nittany Lions will be entering the transfer portal in search of greener pastures?
