Michigan State has to be the surprise team this year in the Big Ten. At least to me they are because the last time I put out power rankings I had them down at No. 12.
The Spartans started off the year by winning the Navy Classic, then reeled off five straight dual meet victories, and next finished in 3rd place at the Southern Scuffle. Not too shabby.
Michigan State then lost to Ohio State 27-14 in a dual which was probably closer than the experts predicted. To get back on track the Spartans beat Purdue, Indiana, and Rutgers to get another winning streak going before splitting with Penn State (28-9 loss) and Maryland (29-6 win).
Michigan State doesn’t have much top-end talent, but they have rounded into a squad that is fairly deep from 125 to 285. Which reflects in their record and the fact they are currently ranked No. 15 in the country.
Next up for the Spartans is a home dual against Northwestern this Friday (2/11) at 7:00 p.m.
