Even without the 2021 Dan Hodge Trophy co-winner (Spencer Lee), the Iowa Hawkeyes are still one of the top teams in the nation. And last season they got their time in the spotlight by hoisting the NCAA Championship team trophy.
There aren’t many teams in the nation who can lose arguably the best wrestler in the nation and not really miss a beat.
And Iowa put that on full display in winning their pool in the National Collegiate Duals and bulldozing their way through the Big Ten regular season. But there was a small bump in the road when Penn State came to town on January 28th.
The Hawkeyes ended up dropping the dual against Penn State 19-13 in front of a sold-out Carver-Hawkeye crowd and their 29 straight dual match winning streak came to an end thanks to their most hated rivals.
Iowa still has two big dual meets to go on the season with the Bout at the Ballpark in Arlington this Saturday (2/12) against Oklahoma State. And an away dual against Nebraska on February 20th.
As I mentioned, Iowa got their time to shine last year, but something tells me it’s going to be somewhat short-lived …
