Penn State Football recruiting using Virginia to beef up offensive line
Penn State Football recruiting landed a commitment from three-star lineman Ahtony Dokoh, Friday, continuing the Lions’ success in Virginia
Penn State Football’s recruiting efforts in Virginia continued to yield big dividends, as the Nittany Lions added another offensive lineman to its 2023 recruiting class with the addition of 3-star Anthony Donkoh on Friday afternoon.
Hailing from Aldie, VA, Donkoh is listed at 6-foot-5 and 310 pounds. He is ranked as the 455th best prospect in the country according to the 247 Sports composite. 247 Sports is higher on him, listing Donkoh as the No. 20 interior lineman in the country and No. 5 player in Virginia. His other offers were Duke, Virginia Tech and West Virginia.
Donkoh joins fellow Virginians Alex Birchmeier, Mathias Barnwell and Joshua Miller in Penn State’s 2023 class. It’s possible that all four end up as offensive linemen at Penn State, depending on what position Barnwell ends up at.
The offensive line may be the most important position for the Nittany Lions in the 2023 cycle. Between the 2021 and 2022 recruiting classes, Penn State only brought in four offensive linemen. With that in mind, offensive line coach Phil Trautwein will look to bring in as much talent as possible in this class.
Considering the talent Penn State brought in at quarterback and running back in 2022, the next step is to build a formidable offensive line around them. The transfer portal should help as well, but Penn State needs to be able to find long-term solutions instead of a constant flow of one-year rentals.
Head coach James Franklin and his staff have wisely taken advantage of the coaching changes at both Virginia and Virginia Tech and now have four of the top ten players from the state of Virginia in the 2023 class. Getting all these guys on board early is a wise move, as you don’t want them to start to build a relationship with the new coaching staffs at the Virginia schools.
With Donkoh on board, Penn State’s 2023 class now as seven members and ranks No. 4 in the nationally rankings and first in the Big Ten.
