The transfer portal is still full of impact players and there are a number of them that could fit some huge holes in key positions for Penn State Football in 2022

The transfer portal continues to be on fire even as we are almost through January but Penn State Football has remained quiet, with their lone addition to this point being Mitchell Tinsley, the wide receiver from Western Kentucky.

Tinsley was a great get for head coach James Franklin but question marks remain for the Nittany Lions on the defensive side of the ball heading into the offseason and next year.

Holes at linebacker and defensive end need to be addressed through the portal with players who have been on the field, been in college weight rooms for a few years and can come to State College and either start or at least contribute from day one.

The Lions have shown interest in a number of players this offseason, including one on this list.

Here’s a look at three defensive players Penn State Football should be targeting right now:

Kameron Butler – Defensive End/Miami Ohio

The former Miami Ohio defensive end announced via his Twitter page on Monday that he has received an offer from the Nittany Lions.

The Nittany Lions are clearly trying to find their next Arnold Ebiketie out of the portal after his phenomenal 2021 campaign and again this season have a hole at defensive end with Ebiketie and Jesse Luketa off to the NFL. They will get Adisa Isaac back from his season-ending injury he suffered in training camp but he is an unproven player even when healthy.

Butler had a breakout season in 2021, collecting 53 total tackles, eight sacks, three forced fumbles and an interception last year. In his last three seasons at Miami he racked up 16 sacks and has been a consistent pass rusher in the MAC.

Listed at six-foot-three and 250 pounds he has the prototypical size for an edge rusher in the Big Ten and an offseason in Penn State Football’s weight room could provide the dividends it did for Ebiketie last season.

It seems the interest is mutual as Butler had the below to say in an interview about Penn State Football.

"“I expect to get a couple more offers and more interest. But Penn State is definitely a school I would love to visit.”"

This would be a solid addition for Penn State Football’s defense next season.
