Penn State Football’s backfield will be a bit less crowded next season, after Noah Cain entered the NCAA Transfer Portal Wednesday

Penn State Football junior running back Noah Cain entered the transfer portal on Wednesday, according to multiple reports.

Cain had just finished up his third season with the Nittany Lions. In those three years, Cain rushed for 806 yards and 12 touchdowns. He showed plenty of promise as a freshman in 2019, rushing for 443 yards on 84 attempts with eight touchdowns. He became Penn State’s “closer” in 2019, coming in the game in the fourth quarter to punish tired defenses with his powerful running style.

What Penn State Football would lose if it lost Noah Cain

A season-ending injury in the 2020 opener against Indiana put his career on pause and Cain struggled to find his footing in 2021, rushing for just 350 yards on 106 attempts.

Penn State Football’s running game as a whole struggled in 2021; the Nittany Lions did not have a 100-yard rusher in a single game this season.

Offensive line play did not help, but the running back room was crowded with Cain, Keyvone Lee, John Lovett and Devyn Ford all seeing playing time in 2021. This did lead to a lack of opportunities for Cain, and the other backs, and no one really separated themselves throughout the year.

Cain was a huge recruiting win for the Nittany Lions back on Signing Day 2019, with James Franklin winning him over just minutes before the 4-star recruit made his decision on national television.

With how crowded the running back room already is, and the arrival of 5-star freshman Nick Singleton and fellow freshman Kaytron Allen, it’s not that surprising to see movement in this group.

Cain has two years of eligibility remaining and should have plenty of suitors if teams believe he can get back to his 2019 form that made him one of the more promising backs in the country.
