Takeaways from Penn State Football’s Drew Allar’s All-American Bowl Performance
4. Final Thoughts
It’s easy to see why the recruiting services rank Allar as high as they do.
The arm talent may be the best we’ve seen at Penn State in a long time. The athleticism is also impressive for someone his size as well. Not many college quarterbacks have the combination of a cannon arm and mobility, but Allar looks to be one of them.
The accuracy is something that should improve with practice, as stated earlier. Getting to Penn State and building relationships with his wide receivers and tight ends will certainly help this, as will hopefully an improvement in offensive line play for the Nittany Lions.
The talent is off the charts for Allar, but he’s definitely still a bit raw. A year behind Sean Clifford may serve him well, as he watches how Clifford prepares each week, while also working on his own game.
Many people want Allar to start from day one but rushing him into the fire may not be the best idea.
Two of the best college quarterbacks this season, Alabama’s Bryce Young and Ohio State C.J. Stroud each took a redshirt year, and it seems to have benefited both greatly. Expect Allar to play in 2022, maybe in a role like Michigan’s 5-star freshman quarterback J.J. McCarthy did this season, although with less running involved for Allar.
All things considered, it’s easy to see Allar commanding big-time offenses for the Nittany Lions in 2023 and 2024.
