Penn State Wrestling improves to 10-0 on the season after defeating Indiana 29-11 in front of a home crowd in Rec Hall

Coming on the heels of a complete butt whoopin’ of the Maryland Terrapins from this past Friday, the Nittany Lions hosted the Indiana Hoosiers on a cold, wet, and icy Sunday afternoon in Happy Valley.

Would a pesky Hoosier’s team pull off the upset to end all upsets against the powerhouse Nittany Lions?

Of course not!

Penn State Wrestling’s dominant back-end of it’s lineup came up big and propelled the Nittany Lions to a 29-11 victory against a much improved Indiana team. But it wasn’t all sunshine, roses, and puppies for the Nittany Lions.

Now onto the wrestling action!

The dual meet started out at 125 where Drew Hildebrandt earned his first win in front of the home crowd at Rec Hall. Although it wasn’t as spectacular as his pin he earned the prior night, it was still an impressive performance as Drew won a decision over a ranked grappler. And once again Penn State came out of the gates to claim the early 3-0 lead.

But this is where the similarities between the two dual meets ended as Baylor Shunk got the nod at 133 and Brandon Meredith suited up at 141. This was most likely just to give Roman Bravo-Young and Nick Lee a maintenance day as according to Jeff Byers the dynamic duo were under the weather.

And unfortunately the inexperienced Nittany Lions weren’t able come through with Shunk losing via a technical fall and Meredith dropping a 9-4 decision. The Hoosier then took the lead 8-3.

Beau Bartlett then did what he does best. Namely win close matches and further exacerbate my hypertension. Which is exactly what happened with Bartlett pulling out the 6-4 decision over his IU opponent.

Next up was Tony Negron, and as much as I would like to say he followed up his first ever win as a Penn State wrestler with his second ever win, I can’t. Because Negron dropped a very close 4-1 match, thus giving Indiana an 11-6 lead going into the break.

IU’s lead proved to be short lived as the second half of Penn State’s lineup flexed their muscles and proceeded to do work on the Hoosiers.

Creighton Edsell got the action going with earning a major decision and Carter Starocci followed this up with a fall. In the process, Penn State reversed an 11-6 deficit into a 16-11 lead.

And for the second straight dual, Aaron Brooks was faced with the toughest challenge of any of the ranked Nittany Lion grapplers on paper. His opponent was Donnell Washington, the No. 8th ranked wrestler at 184 and someone who is an up and coming superstar in the Big Ten.

But this is Aaron Brooks we’re talking about. And he doesn’t back down to any challenge.

After a close first period, Brooks ultimately rolled to a dominant 13-4 major decision over Washington while racking up 3:31 of riding time in the process.

With only two matches remaining in the dual meet, Penn State owned a commanding 20-11 lead.

And when Nittany Lion dual meets start at 125, it generally means there will be a Mad Max and Kerk Kong grand finale. Which is exactly what entailed in this dual.

Max Dean cruised to a comfortable* 9-1 major decision and Greg Kerkvliet continued to pile up bonus points with a 20-3 technical fall to make the final score 29-11 in favor of Penn State.

Next up for Penn State is a nationally televised home dual against Rutgers on Sunday, January 16th at 5pm.

* – I mean as comfortable as it can look when two grown men battle it out on the mat
