The Penn State Wrestling Team earned a hard fought dual victory 20-16 on the road against inter-state opponent Penn on December 3rd

Penn State Wrestling traveled down to Philadelphia Friday night for a tough early season test against a talented University of Penn wrestling squad.

The Nittany Lions were tested early, but in the end left the City of Brotherly Love with a Penn State 20-16 win over Penn.

And the early results weren’t exactly what the doctored ordered as Penn State was down 10-6 going into the intermission following the 157 match. Baylor Shunk and Brandon Meredith fell via a decision and a major decision in the opening two matches as Penn jumped out to a 7-0 lead.

Nick Lee grinded out a decision 6-3 and Beau Bartlett continued his run of nail-biting matches as he prevailed 4-3 in TB to close the gap to 7-6 in favor of Penn. Terrell Barraclough then lost a tough decision 4-2 to make the score 10-6 heading into the intermission.

After the break the action continued to be hot and heavy as Creighton Edsell was able to earn a takedown in SV to pull out a much needed win for the Nittany Lions and once again close the gap to 10-9 in favor of Penn.

Next up at 174, Carter Starocci was able to earn the first bonus points of the night for the Nittany Lions in a 13-3 major decision to give Penn State their first lead of the night, 13-10.

Donovan Ball got the nod at 184 to give Aaron Brooks a breather and he took advantage of the opportunity with an impressive 11-4 decision to extend Penn State’s lead to 16-10.

New comer Max Dean then continued his dominance as he snagged a major decision to extend Penn State’s lead to 20-10. However the Nittany Lions gave up a forfeit at 285 to close out the night and the dual in a 20-16 win.

At this time I don’t have any information regarding why Greg Kerkvliet didn’t suit up, but let’s just hope he’s getting some much needed rest going into Sunday’s upcoming dual.

Up next for Penn State Wrestling is a home dual against another in-state foe, Lehigh, on December 5th at 2:00pm inside Rec Hall.
