First off, huge news out of Ann Arbor recently, as highly coveted transfer Nick Suriano has announced he is going to wrestle for Michigan as a sixth year senior.

While the ramifications have yet to be fully processed, I believe this will narrow the gap between Michigan, Penn State, and Iowa.

Based on the current make up of the Wolverines lineup, Suriano will either slot in at 125 or 133. However the 125 spot seems the most likely.

The Wolverines started off the 2021-2022 season on a decent note as they competed in the Michigan State Open. Michigan had six grapplers place and crowned a champion in the 141 open division (Chance Lamer).

Michigan then took part in a home dual and two away duals against CSU Bakersfield, Columbia, and Buffalo respectively. The Wolverines were triumphant in each as they won by scores of 39-3, 34-3, and 31-3.

One interesting item to keep an eye on is the fact both No. 3 Stevan Micic (141) and No. 2 Myles Amine (184) have yet to suit up for Michigan this season. Micic, an 8th year senior, indicated in September he was going to come back and wrestle once again for the Wolverines. And Amine is dropping down a weight class this season as he competed at 197 last year.

I know it’s early in the season but in order for Michigan to hold onto a top three spot in the Big Ten, they are going to need both of those guys to compete and win.

Next up for the Wolverines is joining the plethora of other Big Ten teams in the Cliff Kleen Las Vegas Invitational on December 3rd and 4th.
