Reason for Optimism – Penn State Football’s Defense

Penn State Football has one of the best defenses in the country, and they are showing no signs of slowing  down anytime soon.

The Nittany Lions’ defense is fifth in the country and second in the Big Ten in opponent’s points per game, with 13.8. They have been especially good defending the passing game.

They are 2nd in the Big Ten in opponent’s average yards per completion with 5.5, and also 2nd in the conference in total passing touchdowns allowed with 4. This is in large part due to the Nittany Lions’ incredible secondary, which is one of the best in the country, led by Jaquan Brisker who is one of the best safeties in the country.

Their run defense has not been quite as good, but it is still good nonetheless. They are allowing an even 3 yards per rush, which is 4th in the Big Ten. Plus, they have only allowed 4 rushing touchdowns all season, tied for 3rd in the conference.

This defense has even played well in situations that are less than ideal, including having to spend far too much time on the field in games such as Wisconsin and Iowa. Also in the Iowa game, they played great for the field position they had to work with most of the game, especially after turnovers.

They ultimately gave up a big passing play for the go-ahead touchdown, but when you spend as much time on the field as they did, you will eventually get beat on a big play.

This defense has stars at every level, starting with Arnold Ebiketie up front.

The linebackers have also been great, as the three starters have combined for 101 tackles and 4 sacks through 6 games. They have been excellent both in run support, and in pass coverage.

As long as this defense does not suffer any more major injuries, they can limit any offense in the country and will give this chance to win every remaining game on their schedule.
