Iowa handled Kent State rather easily, beating them 30-7 on Saturday.

This Hawkeyes defense is playing at an elite level, as they’ve only given up 30 points in three games. Kent State was able to rush for only 79 yards and the Hawkeyes racked up seven sacks, this front seven is one of the best in the country so far.

For how awesome the defense is, the offense still looks like a work in progress. This was a 16-7 game until the very end up of the third quarter when running back Tyler Goodson broke a 35-yard run for a touchdown. Goodson did his job, rushing for 153 yards and three scores in the game.

The problem is, no one seems overly scared of the Iowa passing attack as Spencer Petras has just 460 yards and two touchdowns through three games. When Iowa faces stronger offenses like Penn State, they are going to have to be able to put up points and not rely solely on the defense.

For now, this defense can carry this team, especially with a game against Colorado State up next. We’ll see how they do in a couple weeks when they face the Maryland passing attack.

Despite the concerns on offense, Iowa’s defense and running attack is just too good to ignore, and the win over Iowa State is impressive.
