Penn State’s Chris Godwin catches Tom Brady’s first TD pass of NFL season
Former Penn State Football wide receiver Chris Godwin became the answer to a trivia question, catching the first touchdown of the 2021 NFL season
Tom Brady, Chris Godwin, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ offense picked up right where they left off, during Thursday night’s NFL season-opener against the Dallas Cowboys.
With 5:26 remaining in the first quarter, former Penn State Football wide receiver Chris Godwin slipped past ex-Nittany Lions linebacker Micah Parsons, and found the seam in the Dallas Cowboys’ defense, hauling in a perfectly-thrown four-yard touchdown pass from Brady.

Godwin’s touchdown gave the Buccaneers a 7-0 lead, and the touchdown reception was the first of the NFL season.
A key member of the Buccaneers’ Super Bowl winning nucleus, Godwin finished last season with 65 receptions on 83 total targets for 840 yards and seven touchdowns.
More importantly, Godwin has developed into one of Brady’s favorite targets. The seven-time Super Bowl championship winning quarterback had a 131.9 passer rating when targeting Godwin during the 2020 NFL season.
Pro Football Focus gave Godwin an 80.9 receiving grade last season.
Godwin has the chance to once again be a focal point of the Buccaneers’ aerial attack; along with Mike Evans and tight end Rob Gronkowski.
Playing this season under the franchise tag, Godwin has the chance to cash in as one of the highest-paid wide receivers in the NFL, especially if he can build on a strong start to this season and capitalize on his strong chemistry and cohesion with Brady.
