Final thoughts on Madison’s game day atmosphere

The fans in Madison were absolutely lovely.

We enjoyed conversations with almost everyone sitting around us the entire game.

They enjoyed talking about their pride and joy (cheese curds from Culver’s) and had shockingly reasonable expectations about their team.

Most fans weren’t really upset they lost, like they almost expected it. Imagine Wolverine fans leaving Michigan Stadium after a loss where they ran almost two times the amount of plays.  It was a refreshing sense of realism you don’t normally see from college football fans (or any fans).

Did we hear some “F Penn State’s” from students?  Sure.  Sandusky jokes?  What else is new.

But, most student sections are like that to opposing fans and it wasn’t anything Nittany Nation hasn’t heard before.

All in all, the Badger faithful were welcoming and gracious hosts and the “great game guys” post-game far outnumbered the “f you’s” from the students.

Fast Final Thoughts

  • Very unique marching band: the “Fifth Quarter” featuring all kinds of crazy formations and was full of energy, even after a brutal loss.
  • The Wisconsin student section does the most odd chant I’ve ever heard; back forth from one half of the student section to the other (not the rest of the stadium, not the opposing fans), was “Eat S***” and then “F*** You.”  Huh?  Why!  It was awkward and clear the older alumni do not like this ‘tradition.’   Wildly out of place and simply unnecessary vulgarity, I’m glad we don’t have this chant anywhere near Penn State’s student section.
  • Former Badger Head Coach and Athletic Director Barry Alverez had a nice statue just inside the stadium and was featured in their pre-game video … it’s a shame we are seemingly unable to do that to the architect of our football program.
  • Take State College out of the equation, Madison could be the best college town in the Big Ten.  If you get a chance, it’s worth the long drive!
