Former Steelers quarterback Charlie Batch heaps high praise on former Penn State Football tight end and Pittsburgh rookie Pat Freiermuth

Charlie Batch started for the Detroit Lions for four years, was the Pittsburgh Steelers’ backup quarterback for eight seasons, and is already impressed by what he’s seen from former Penn State Football tight end Pat Freiermuth.

“Freiermuth is a better blocker and he’s comparable as a pass catcher to (current Steelers tight end) Eric Ebron,” Batch said, during an appearance on FanSided’s The Matt Lombardo Show podcast. “I think everything that Freiermuth did at Penn State, they loved him for that.”

Batch went on to refer to the fact that Freiermuth never dropped a red zone pass during his time in Happy Valley, and how that’s already translated to success on the NFL gridiron as Freiermuth caught two touchdowns against the Lions in a preseason game last week.

Batch isn’t the only quarterback impressed by Freiermuth. The former Nittany Lion’s current quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger, compared Freiermuth to a Steelers legend following last week’s game.

“If he can continue to get those comparisons to Heath Miller that Ben Roethlisberger is making right now, he’s set for a realy good career,” Batch said.

Perhaps the most powerful quote was simple: “(Pat) Freiermuth is the key,” Batch says. “They (Steelers) need to fill that position.”

Strong words about the 55th pick of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Freiermuth figures to play a key role in the Steelers’ passing game, and Batch sounds optimistic he’ll make a major impact as a rookie.
