No. 20

November 14, 2010
University Park, Pa
No. 15 Lehigh 17, No. 6 Penn State 21

Coming off back-to-back losses to Lehigh in both the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 seasons, the Nittany Lions were looking to prove to their in-state foe just how good they were.

In Sanderson’s inaugural season (2009-2010) as Penn State’s head coach, the Mountain Hawks slapped around the Nittany Lions in a lopsided 23-14 match.

But this would be the last time that would happen as the Penn State Wrestling squad had their sights set on some sweet revenge.

The dual meet started out at 125 where both Penn State Wrestling and Lehigh traded wins in each of the first two matches to make it 4-3 in favor of the Mountain Hawks.

In two of the next three matches, Penn State’s talent started to shine through as No. 14 Andrew Alton (PSU) and No. 6 David Taylor (PSU) each earned falls to take a 15-7 lead.

Penn State Wrestling snagged two more decisions by Jake Kemerer (PSU) and No. 13 Ed Ruth (PSU) to further extend the lead to 21-7.

The good news? Penn State had a 14 point lead with only three matches to go.

The bad news? Lehigh wasn’t finished.

No. 14 Robert Hamlin (LU) earned a hard fought upset decision over No. 3 Quentin Wright (PSU) and the Mountain Hawks managed to only earn a major decision in the following match to narrow Penn State’s lead to 21-14.

Lehigh went on to win the final match of the dual but it was too little too late as the Nittany Lions secured the 21-17 in front of a packed house at Rec Hall.

Since the back-to-back losses against Lehigh in the late 2000’s, Penn State has now gone a perfect 10-0 against the once dominant in-state wrestling school.
